Artillery Shells & Cannonballs

AR317    Federal 4.2" Parrott Shell (Schenkl Fuse)

Here is a very nice and slick Parrott shell for the 30lb gun. This piece has been expertly preserved and the metal is very nice, solid, and stable. The sabot is missing allowing you to see how the sabot was attached. The fuse (Schenkl Navy) is in excellent condition and reads, "J.P.Schenkl/Pat.Oct.1861." This shell/fuse combination is a little less common.

AR318    Federal 4.2" Parrott Shell (Naval Fuse)

Here is a very nice and slick Parrott shell for the 30lb gun. This piece has been expertly preserved and the metal is very nice, solid, and stable. The sabot is missing allowing you to see how the sabot was attached. The fuse is in excellent condition and reads, "ORD ANCHOR/ 1864." Bell states that they began using Schenkl and Navy Watercap fuses in May of 1863.

AR319    Federal 6.4" Parrott Shell (Short Pattern)

Excellent condition 100lb Parrott shell. This one was recovered from the Fort Fisher North Carolina Defenses. It has been expertly cleaned and coated. The metal is slick and solid. you can still see some of the lathe marks from the factory finish. This one has been disarmed through the bottom so all of the sides are displayable standing up. The zinc Parrott percussion fuse is still intact.

AR320    Federal 6.4" Parrott Shell (Short Pattern)

Nice excavated 100lb. Parrott shell recovered from the Fort Fisher North Carolina Defenses. This shell has been professionally cleaned and the metal is slick and solid. This particular shell is fused with an 1861 dated Navy Watercap Fuse. It has been disarmed through the bottom so all of the sides are displayable standing up.

AR312    3/4's of a Confederate 4.52" Howitzer Canister Round

Here is a very nice excavated Confederate relic. This is exactly 3/4 of a Confederate Howitzer Canister. Instead of the normal 29 balls for the common 12lb canister this one had 4 rows of 12 (48). This particular canister has two complete rows, the third row is missing two balls, and there are two balls on the top row. The canister plates are missing on this example. However if you would like one from the same site I have a few available. One of the canister balls on the bottom has a very long sprue. This trait is very common on Confederate Canister Balls. I can deliver this one to the Gettysburg show if you would like.

Measures approximately 4" tall and 5" in diameter.

AR304    Confederate Canister plate for 4.52" Round (Extra Thick)

Description: Here is a very nice excavated Confederate Canister plate. This one is extra thick and measures just over a half an inch thick. This may be the thickest canister plate I have ever seen.

AR309    Nose Section for a rare 3.67" Blakely Shell (Star Cavity)

Nice excavated nose for a rare Blakely shell. You can see one bourreleted ring. This shell was meant to be fused with a wooden time fuse. You can see the interior "star" shaped cavity. These shells were produced with this cavity to break open in smaller fragments upon exploding. This is a very nice piece to a rarity nine shell.

AR306    Federal 3" Percussion Fused Hotchkiss Shell

Very nice condition Hotchkiss Shell. This non fired example has been cleaned. The fuse is in excellent shape and the sabot is intact.

AR305    Federal 3" Hotchkiss Nose Section

Nice excavated nose section for a 3" Hotchkiss artillery shell. This is the later type with the flame grooves on the side. This one has a very nice percussion fuse attached. It has been cleaned and coated for your enjoyment.

AR301    Lead Sabot for a Sawyer Artillery Shell

Very neat piece with a small fragment still attached. The patent date is clearly marked on the bottom "Patented Nov. 13, 1855. This would look great in an artillery collection.

AR299    4.52" Spherical Bormann "Common" Shell

Description:  Nice excavated Federal Bormann Shell. This one has some moderate pitting but is in nice overall condition. Someone has painted on this one. The fuse is intact but is not legible.

AR208    Federal 4.5" Dyer Shell For Siege Rifle (No Sabot)

Nice excavated 4.5" Dyer shell. This one has light to moderate pitting over the entire body. The zinc time fuse adaptor is still present but the sabot is missing showing how it was attached to the base. These were recovered from the Augusta Arsenal Dump. You can still hear the case shot rattling around inside.

AR213    Stand for 11" Cannonball

Very nice stand for 11" shells. Unfortunately these high quality stands aren't being made anymore. This one is powder coated black. There are eight rubber pads around the top, as well as eight feet which are covered in green felt.

AR43     Federal 2.9" Parrott Shell for 3" Parrott Gun

Nice excavated Parrott shell. This shell still retains some of its zinc time fuse adaptor. The wrought iron sabot shows three lands and three grooves from being fired.

AR7    Wright Time Fused Case Shot for 12lb. Smoothbore Cannon

Nice half shell! This is a rarer half shell than what you normally see out there for sale. Instead of lead case shot balls this one was filled with Williams Type III cleaner bullets. They were packed in sulfur matrix inside of the shell. You can also see where the powder can would have been. This fuse hole on this shell is a little larger than your typical Bormann. This one has been cleaned and coated for your enjoyment and comes with a nice display stand!

AR116    Confederate 4.52" Case Shot Shell with Iron Side loader

Nice excavated 12lb confederate side loader. This shell shows moderate pitting. The copper time fuse is in excellent shape and the iron side loader plug is visible.

AR59    12lb. Confederate Mortar Shell Cut in Half (Polygonal)

Nice example of a confederate pentagonal mortar shell. This one has been sawn in half exposing the interior of the shell. This particular shell has the pentagonal pattern. These were cast this way in order to make thin sections of the shell. Upon explosion, the shell would break into uniform patterns

AR327    Federal Copper Friction Primer

Nice copper friction primer.

AR326    English Style Quill Primer

Nice quill primer. This one has not been used. One of the attachment wires is broken but the other one is intact and is still holding the arm on. These were manufactured from feathers unlike their later counterparts manufactured from copper tubes.

AR325    Copper Armstrong Friction Primer

These are just post war and are marketed to the public as Armstrong Friction Primers. They are manufactured like a regular friction primer. When the loop is pulled by the lanyard friction causes the inside substance to ignite. They are a little thicker stock than the conventional Civil War Friction Primer.

AR53    Taylor Time Fuse Hood

Nice non excavated taylor time fuse hood. These were attached between the shell and the fuse. The idea was that the flames would be forced into the fuse holes and increase the chances of the fuse lighting when being fired.

AR324    Selma Metallic Quill Primer

Here is an extremely rare Selma friction primer for you advanced artillery collectors. These are tough to get and this one is water recovered. A perfect one runs around $200.00. This one is priced accordingly and is bent. It may be some time before you see another one of these.

Excellent dug time fuse adapter that would screw back into a shell that has been retapped.

AR316    Schenkl Percussion Fuse Piece

This is what happens to a lot of Schenkl fuses. I don't know how many I have dug from Shepherdstown that ended up this way. The rest of the shell is fine while the top has blown right off.

AR205    Confederate Copper Time Fuse Adaptor for Rifled Projectiles

Excavated Confederate fuse adaptor in excellent condition. There are no tweaks or bends on this one. The threads could be cleaned up and used on a projectile. This one is interesting because of the double tapered base section. Notice how it is bulged inwards.
