D275    Excavated Confederate Filter Canteen

Very nice excavated confederate canteen. This is the filter canteen pattern. A tube carried water from the source through a charcoal filter and into the small hole. The soldier could then drink somewhat clean water out of the larger hold. The iron on this piece is excellent for being excavated. There is a distinct solder seam on the back where the piece was put together. The actual tin spout is still intact. Although flattened a little bit these pieces are rare.  There is an exact canteen of this type in O'Donnell & Sylvia's first canteen book. How often do you see dug filter canteens, especially dug Confederate filter canteens. I have seen a lot more dug Confederate tin drum canteens than these.
