Published Confederate Side Knife
Here is a nice one
folks. This excavated Confederate side knife is in excellent condition. The
wooden handle is long since gone but the hand forged diamond shaped guard is
still attached. The entire knife has been covered in a rust converter. This is
the exact knife that is pictured in Crouch's book on page 68 on the far right
hand side. These large knives are great to have in your personal items
collection. This one came out of a collection from North Carolina. It is thought
that the knife was dug in the Fort Fisher area. I am still waiting on the
confirmation. It is always nice to have these published pieces in your
collection. A true investment!

Excavated P1853 Enfield Musket
This has to be the
first musket ever to be recovered using a metal detector. It was recovered by
Gavin on the 25th of November in 1946. This is a very historical piece.
According to his ledger book this was one of Gavin's first times out. This would
have been on the same day that he found the CS cartridge box tin with the bullet
inside that is pictured in The Illustrated History of American Civil War Relics
on page 193. There is a lot of history in this already historical piece. Gavin's
handwritten tag hangs on the board and reads, "Enfield Musket, Cold Harbor, June
1-12 1864, 6th Corps Area, Found 11/25/46, "First Find." Another handwritten tag
reads, "Enfield Rifle Cold Harbor All Parts Hammer Missing, Found Nov. 1946 6th
Corps." There is one more tag that is wrapped around the barrel that reads, "
Cold Harbor Found Nov. '46." This gun has been nicely mounted on a plaque that
is ready to hang on your wall. The hammer and ramrod are missing but all of the
other parts are intact. Due to this being an early find it doesn't need much
cleaning. It is very hard to find relics like this anymore.
Measures Approximately
4.25 Feet in Length.

Regulation 1839 Pattern "US" Box Plate (Smaller Pattern)
Here
is another nice excavated "US" box plate. This pattern is a little harder to
find. It isn't as big as most plates but it a little larger than most medium
sized plates. This one has an excellent face with dirt highlighting the US. The
back retains nearly all of the solder and is missing one hook. Gavin's
handwritten tag is on the back and reads, "Spotsylvania 9th Corps, Landis's
Trench." I have tried to find out who Landis was but my limited research hasn't
turned up anything.

Excellent dug brass looped box plate. The face of this plate is very nice. The
rear retains most of the original solder. Both brass loops are intact while
bent. One of them is slightly broken. Gavin's handwritten tag is on the back and
reads, "Bunker Hill WVA-Confed. Camp- Rare Brass Hooks $20.00." The prices
aren't like they used to be as you can see. This pattern of brass looped plate
is much harder to find than the conventional pattern of brass looped cartridge
box plates

Excavated Enfield Musket
Very nice dug Enfield
musket. This would be an easy one to clean up because it is an early dug piece.
Everything is here except for the ramrod and the lock and hammer. The buttplate,
trigger guard, rear sight, front sight, barrel, trigger assembly, and all of the
barrel bands are here. This one was dug by Bill Gavin many years on the
Chancellorsville Battlefield on the Chandler Line. Gavin's handwritten tags are
still attached. One says "Chancellorsville" while the other reads, "Enfield
Rifle Musket Chancellorsville, Chandler Line No Lock or Hammer." You can still
see some numbers near the nipple on top of the barrel. If you like to do
restoration this is the piece for you as it would clean up to be a magnificent
piece.

Regulation 1826 Pattern NCO Eagle Shoulder Belt Plate (Maker Marked)
Published Example
Here
is another outstanding example of an early dug breastplate. This one still
retains two out of the three iron hooks. The back retains nearly all of the lead
and is lightly marked "WHSMITH/BROOKLYN." There is even some random carving on
the back. Unfortunately this plate has been cleaned so I can't match it up.
However, it is one of 23 that were dug on the Cold Harbor Battlefield on
November 1956. This would go great with your dug Cold Harbor collection. Bill's
handwritten tag is still attached and reads Cold Harbor 6th Corps Nov. 1956.

This plate is
published in Sylvia and O'Donnell's, "The Illustrated History of American Civil
War Relics on Page 192. It is hard to tell which one it is because it has been
cleaned. This is one of 23 that Gavin dug over a two day period. At first I
thought that it was unfortunate that the plate was cleaned. However, this plate
was cleaned because it is featured the second edition of, "Accoutrement Plates
North & South 1861-1865" by William G. Gavin. This is the second plate down on
page 4 of chapter one. The opposite page is supposed to be the backs of the
plates on page 4. However, upon closer inspection...you can clearly see that the
back of this plate really isn't the back. Every scratch and dirt area matches
up. Don't miss your chance to own a very historic and published piece of
history.

breastplate. These other relics are not included. This plate is still covered in dirt. Both hooks are missing on the
back. Gavin's hand written tag is attached to the back and reads, "Antietam."

Here
is a very nice excavated Confederate relic. This is exactly 3/4 of a Confederate

canister plates are missing on this example. However if you would like one from
